It has been nearly three years since our last book was published. A great many things have changed, and we have all had to learn to live with some less than awesome truths about the world, but now more than ever, the diversion of TTRPGing and the company of good friends is needed. To that end, in preparation for the forthcoming Into the Breach: the Druid, I sit down with fellow Pincushioner, long time friend, and gaming brother Frank Gori to chat about the druid class. A class that is very close to my heart for a great many reasons.</span></p><span id="docs-internal-guid-f7504143-7fff-d8e3-a88d-7ee6a8b00973"><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to sit down and answer my questions!</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: Anytime.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: Can you give the readers a little about yourself and your role at The Flying Pincushion?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: Co-owner/Co-Lead Developer and rule of cool enthusiast.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: Starting off with the easy questions, what is your favorite thing about the druid class?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: Versatility first and foremost. I can make a melee Druid that loves to wildshape, or a sharpshooting elvish druid, or a druid that rides a tiger and uses a spear, or a blaster caster, or a summoner or a hybrid of any of those. Druids can adapt to just about any role you want them to be in without multiclassing or you can do some crazy things with just a dip into something else.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: The druid class has been around a good long while in a number of editions, why do you think it has such longevity?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: There’s a mystique to them. Everyone knows we’re not designed to sit behind a desk all day and all of us have some level of connection to the natural world. If your heart ever gets broken by plastic litter in a lake there’s a little druid in you. It’s a relatable mystique.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: As the druid stands in its current Pathfinder form as a base class, if you could add or remove one ability, what would it be?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: I don’t think “trackless step” has ever come up for any Druid I have ever played, mostly tracking comes up with rangers and PCs are on the other side of it. It matches the class theme but rarely shines in use.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: As we all know, druidry was an ancient form of real life religion, and persists in one form or another today. What do you think the challenges of this fact are when writing about them in a fantasy setting?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: As versatile as they are I just don’t see a silly Druid as a respectful choice. They are otherwise kind of a staple class/option in fantasy.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: Animal companions are a big part of the druid class, do you have a favorite animal, and if so, why?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: Yak/Bull/Oxen all use the same statline/progression and they are tanky mounts that hit like a truck. Something about riding 1k lbs of muscle and horns appeals to me.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: The druids spell list is often touted as one of the best around, why do you think this is?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: It’s a full caster that has their entire spell list available to call, which is second only to the wizard list but with healing. They get midrange HD, oftentimes an animal companion that can tank, and an array of useful skills and class features. It IS the BEST class.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: The druid is a class all about nature, the elements, and balance. Do you think there is a right and/or wrong way to play them given the inherent ethics the class seems to have?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: Druids even in fantasy settings are in conflict with civilizing forces, trying to combat that is a little hopeless at times even with god tier power so to me there’s a tinge of sadness in every druid.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: Now for an extra tough question, the druid as noted above seems to have a set of ethics and a deep seated philosophy built into it, so given this, what is the most important lesson you think the class has to teach us in our modern world, state of the planet such as it is?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: Consequences are inherent to nature, the Druid can be those consequences personified but even without them this translates to the real world. We may believe we have mastered nature but climate change is here and our technology can only do so much.</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">JH: The druid ability “ A Thousand Faces” is one of the few druid abilities that is not overly nature themed; do you think it belongs in the class and is in keeping with the rest of the theme of the class?</span></p><br /><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">FG: It feels like a fey addition to the druid, it is not the only one and oddly enough I do actually think it works a little. <div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While I personally did not always agree with his politics, I do wholeheartedly agree with the strength, courage, honor, and sacrifice that Senator John McCain showed in all aspects of his life. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
His love of country and unyielding stoicism in the face of deprivation and torture while in captivity in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton", and later against the rising tide of American isolationism and base populism shows the full measure of his quality. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our country is a poorer place with his passing, and the very real dangers he fought against, both at home and abroad, remain. But what we should all take from the life of Senator John McCain is that no matter our failings, our missteps, we can, nae, must, get back up, admit to our failings, and strive always to be better than we were the day before.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
“We have made mistakes. We haven’t always used our power wisely. We have
abused it sometimes and we’ve been arrogant. But, as often as not, we
recognized those wrongs, debated them openly, and tried to do better.
And the good we have done for humanity surpasses the damage caused by
our errors. We have sought to make the world more stable and secure, not
just our own society. We have advanced norms and rules of international
relations that have benefited all. We have stood up to tyrants for
mistreating their people even when they didn’t threaten us, not always,
but often. We don’t steal other people’s wealth. We don’t take their
land. We don’t build walls to freedom and opportunity. We tear them
down. To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a
century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to
refuse the obligations of international leadership for the sake of some
half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather
find scapegoats than solve problems is unpatriotic. American nationalism
isn’t the same as in other countries. It isn’t nativist or imperial or
xenophobic, or it shouldn’t be. Those attachments belong with other
tired dogmas that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history. We
live in a land made from ideals, not blood and soil. We are custodians
of those ideals at home, and their champion abroad.”

<br />
If it proved popular we'd make it for real.<br />
<br />
I decided we're better than that. Let us know if this is a product that you'd actually be interested in.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Stealthaphant</b> - there's something equally comedic and terrifying about a large creature that actually does stealth well. In my imaginings this would be a magical beast created by a ritual (this would come with a spell similar to awakening in level.) The tucks would have arcane symbols carved in and the elephant amung other things would be more intelligent, able to change it's size and use invisibility.<br />
<br />
<b>EnHorser</b> - Aside from fixing the somewhat criminal choice to make hoovestrikes a secondary attack for horses this is more of a animal companion archetype specific to horses and camels. Basically playing with the fact that being ridden down by calvary is terrifying because of the horse not the guy riding it. Cavaliers will squee if this comes to fruition.<br />
<br />
<b>ReVoltron</b> - This is a 6 in one entry. 5 undead with the unique option to combine into a greater threat. Yes at least onf of them will be an undead lion.<br />
<br />
<b>Alley-saurus </b>- Okay so Pathfinder and other fantasy often let us fight dinosaurs in jungles and the like but rarely do we see dinosaurs that are actually evolved for more modern i.e. sometimes cold climate. Nor do we see dinosaurs that actually make sense in say a city. Enter the Alley-saurus and probably a whole slew of dinosaurs that are modern reimaginings on the historic creatures. This is a concept I'm excited for.<br />
<br />
<b>Badgerdilles/Antlerboars </b>- Some of the best monsters are hybrids of 2 animals, we have a bunch of these that I think the community would enjoy.<br />
<br />
<b>Necopoli-Ants </b>- There's a real ant that basically can kill and control a wasps body called the pilot ant. In a world with magic we can make that so much more terrifying. Imagine an ant queen that can animate dead, and the swarm that lives inside of these zombie monsters. Got a jaded crew of seen everything grognards? They haven't seen this.<br />
<br />
I've been toying with a monster book for years. They are expensive on the art budget and a bastard to put together, so the only way it works is if there's enough interest to put together a kickstarter.<br />
<br />
I've helped and contributed to other kickstarters so if this turns out to be a thing I'll be calling in some favors. This is NOT a prank. I'm seriously considering this. I skipped the ThinkGeek style approach here let me know if it's something the community is genuinely interested in.Frank Gorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05514634147380766321noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1923828999454954293.post-48485279511686215172018-03-14T15:00:00.000-07:002018-03-14T15:00:33.187-07:00Farewell to You Timelord<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Everyone has seen the news, names like Harvey and Irma will not soon be forgotten.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But what now?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There is a saying...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"You can watch things happen, you can make things happen, or you can wonder what the f@*k just happened..."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I for one know which I am going to choose.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Get involved, donate, volunteer, send clean water and clothes, toys, pet food, what ever you can spare...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No matter what you do, just do something.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our fellow Americans need us now more than ever to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Do not wait for Uncle Sam, or anyone else to do it for you.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Make a difference, BE THE DIFFERENCE!</div>

The originator and mastermind behind the modern zombie film, George A. Romero has passed away at age 77.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />The world has lost a visionary film maker, a man who through his storytelling fought stereotypes and racism with elegance and insight. A man who sparked an entire genre, without George, there would be no Walking Dead.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Unlike his great film creations however, may George rest peacefully forever more.</div>

The Flying Pincushion extends its sympathies to the family and friends of William Christopher on his passing.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For me, the character of Father Mulcahy, so masterfully played by William Christopher, in the hit TV show M*A*S*H, resonates over nearly a life-time. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Even with more than 30 years past since the show ended, whenever I watch an episode, something within it always seems to offer insight into our world now, though the conflicts are different, so much seems not so very much so.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Behind all the humor and insanity that often encompassed the lives of the members of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, is a hard and unyielding look at the horrific effects of war.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Many of those parralells and revelations I owe to the character of Father Mulcahy, which for me is perhaps all the more interesting given my own very different religious views.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Christopher's Padre stood firm as a figure of mercy and compassion in a world turned terribly cruel and indifferent to suffering, and never needed a gun, just occasionally a good right hook.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Carrie Fisher</span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
10/21/1956 - 12/27/2016</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Today, there is a great sadness in the force.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Flying Pincushion mourns and loss of actress, author, and advocate Carrie Fisher. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
She showed the world (and me) how much Imperial arse a woman could kick as Princess Leia. Beyond that role however, Carrie Fisher was an accomplished author, speaker, and a tireless mental health advocate, among many other things.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Her family and friends have our deepest condolences and sympathy. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But much like the Rebellion her most famous character fought for, her accomplishments, both on film and off, will live on.</div>
